The Department of Social Work established in 2007 with a motto that education is not only to get degree and job but also to learn how to lead life. The department has qualified, experienced and dedicated staff. It is equipped with modern infrastructure like class rooms with Smart Board, LCD Projector, computer Lab with internet connectivity, Uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity, Department Library and Seminar Hall.
The Participatory Pedagogy, Field Work Practicum, Seminars, Workshops, Training programmes, Community Camps, Exposure Visits, Community Extension Programmes, Student Mentoring, and Special Lecture aims to attain overall development of students to equip with soft skills, life skills, research skills, computer skills, communication skills, and documentation skills. Campus interviews conducted for placement with the help of Akka MSW Alumna Association. The department has MoU with several international and national organisations to widen the learning and employment opportunities for students through collaborative research, dissemination and field action programmes. Enabling women students to develop adequate knowledge, skills and techniques to work in the field of development and establish themselves as change agents of society.
In order to realise the Vision and Mission of the department, through curriculum of social work every student is expected to;
- Apply critical thinking skills within the context of professional social work practice.
- Understand the value base of the profession and its ethical standards and principles, and practice accordingly.
- Practice without discrimination and with respect, knowledge, and skills related to clients’ age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, family structure, gender, marital status, national origin, religion, sex, and sexual orientation.
- Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and apply strategies of advocacy and social change that advance social and economic justice.
- Understand and interpret the history of the social work profession and its contemporary structures and issues.
- Apply knowledge and skills of a generalist social work perspective to practice with systems of all sizes.
- Use theoretical frameworks supported by empirical evidence to understand individual development and behavior across the life span and the interactions among individuals and between individuals and families, groups, organizations, and communities.
- Analyze, formulate, and influence social policies.
- Evaluate research studies, apply research findings to practice, and evaluate their own practice interventions.
- Use supervision and consultation appropriate to social work practice.
- Function within the structure of organizations and service delivery systems and seek necessary organizational change.
