The department was established during the academic year 2007-2008. The department offers M.LI.Sc, M.Phil, Ph.D. and CLibSc programs. The Department aspires, through its various programs, to provide outstanding education in Library and Information Science.The Department is committed to the University’s mission of teaching, learning, research, and community services. As a professional department, which would empower students, in both theoretical and Practical, to identify, acquire, organize and disseminate information. By integrating technology across the curriculum, the department will impart the knowledge and skills of the profession in preserving and providing access to the records of our cultural heritage and the documents of scholarly research. By nurturing research, innovation, and service, the department will strive to offer high-quality student-centered programs necessary to prepare library and information professionals in the knowledge society of the 21st century. The Department of Library Science would be recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in producing information professionals.
 
Library and Information Science is a growing subject interconnected heavily with information technology and telecommunication fields. In fact web enabled information services and resources have been considered as the thrust area for the development of IT industry in India as such a post graduate student may find wide opportunities in any sector - Public enterprises, R&D organizations, Industrial establishments, Corporate sectors, and Academic institutions.   • To provide a professional training for information specialists in order to enable them to organize information and manage different types of library and information institutions
  • To make them aware about the growth and development of universe of knowledge and its organization in different fields.
  • To provide training in methods and techniques of research and their application to the problems in Library and Information Science and preparing one for further research.
  • To acquaint students with the theory and practices of Information Technology in information collection, processing, storage and retrieval.
  • To contribute to the intellectual and scientific activities on or off campus and to carry out research by organizing seminars, conferences, and scientific meetings.
  • To contribute to the continuing education of information professionals by organizing workshops and consultations.
  • To offer services to information institutions and coordinate and establish cooperation with them by organizing    
    conferences and providing consultations and transferring expertise through the participation of the Department faculty in
    workshops, symposia etc To cooperate and coordinate with KSWUB academic departments, by providing services with
    regard to the use of   information sources, research methods, and search strategies on the Internet. To collaborate with
    foreign universities and scientific institutions in the area of  scientific research, exchange of experience, and the  training of students.
